Maria Mendez on Being Honest About Feeling Behind on AI
Most people who feel behind on a new technology talk themselves out of it. Maria Mendez, a real estate agent and broker in Palm Beach County, told us the opposite: being behind on AI is exactly the reason to start learning it today. We caught up with Maria at the Aspire conference, her second time attending, where she was refreshingly honest about where she stands with AI as a working real estate professional.

Maria has built her real estate business in Palm Beach County on the kind of steady, in-person credibility that doesn't come from a single viral post. Attending industry conferences like Aspire is part of how she stays current. "I think they are very well organized," she told us, "and the knowledge that they give us, I believe for such a little money, is wonderful. It's a lot of knowledge and a lot of wonderful people that you meet here."
Her Honest Take on AI
What stood out most in our conversation was Maria's candor. "AI is a little challenging for me," she admitted, without any of the defensiveness that usually comes with that admission. Instead of stopping there, she turned it into advice for people with more runway than she has left in her own career. "But if I'm younger, what I will do, I will learn all the AI I can. I think it's an amazing industry, and I think there's a lot of money to be made of in that industry."
That's a distinction worth sitting with. Maria isn't dismissing AI because it's hard for her to pick up. She's pointing at it as one of the biggest opportunities available to whoever is willing to learn it early, even while acknowledging she's still working on her own comfort with it.
Why Her Perspective Matters
A lot of AI coverage skips straight to the founders who were early adopters and already fluent. Maria's perspective is more useful for most working professionals: you don't have to be an expert to see the opportunity clearly, and admitting you're still learning doesn't disqualify you from encouraging the next generation to get ahead of it.

In practice
- Admitting AI is hard for you doesn't disqualify you from recommending it to others
- The opportunity is often biggest in the tools you feel most behind on
- Keep showing up to the rooms where the knowledge actually gets shared
